Name a heroine you like, but whom you feel is always overshadowed by the male characters in the story
Momoko Hyakushiki (Nanbaka)
Although Momoko isn’t one of the main characters in the series, she’s fully recognized as an outstanding prison warden. Her main purpose in the series serves as a gag, since she’s madly in love with Sugoroku Hajime but, unfortunately for her, he (and many others) are terrified of her. While this exchange is hilarious, I feel like she’s constantly overshadowed by the male cast. This is a shame since she’s the only female character in the series; so it’d be nice to see her participate more often. Being a supportive character is no excuse since there are multiple male secondary characters that have a lot of screen time that’s not used solely for gags.
For that matter, name a heroine whom you feel is always overshadowed by the other female characters in the story
Jirou Kyouka “Earphone Jack” (Boku no Hero Academia)
This is something that happens in any shounen series with a hella lot of characters and kind of inevitable. While Jirou does have her share of fans, I feel like it’s nowhere near as close to characters like Tsuyu, Ochako or Momo. Hopefully we get to see more of her!
Name a character who had potential but was greatly underutilized in her story
Mishima Lisa (Zankyou no Terror)
This series… god. I feel like not only Lisa’s character but the whole series had a lot of potential but was handled like crap. Lisa starts off as a timid girl (who lives with her mentally unstable mother) that slowly starts to get courage the more she spends time with Nine and especially Twelve. However, in the end, she didn’t do much. She was just… there. She felt like a completely insipid character whose only purpose was to be a love interest. Still, it’s not only Lisa’s fault; I feel like this anime started off very well, even continued to get more and more interesting… only to be ruined by the finale.
Name a female character who you either find better in her
book game than her movie anime, find better in her movie anime than her book game, or whose portrayals you find equal
Maya Fey (Ace Attorney)
That feel when anime ruins everything… ugh. Don’t get me wrong, I feel like most often than not people are very unfair towards anime adaptations cause’ they don’t know the time and effort it takes to make an animated series plus their expectations are waaaay to high; they keep comparing the anime to the original and aaaaalways have something to criticize. Criticism is fine and all but not when you’re merely hating on something and don’t give valid reasons. In Ace Attorney’s case… there are a lot of reasons. First of all, the animation is AWFUL (and I know they can do so much fucking better, just look at the cutscenes in the games!). Then, there’s just no impact! The trials just kind of happen, the scenes are kinda there… yet it feels like there wasn’t any research done so as to know how to convey the game experience with anime. It just doesn’t work. Maya is an amazing character who has a lot of development, funny moments and more; however, the anime makes it all look stupid and ridiculous.
Name a character who you want more backstory on
Kobayashi (Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon)
Despite being one of the protagonists from the series, I feel like we know almost nothing about Kobayashi’s backstory. She’s a programmer who lives alone, barely visits her family and gets drunk to let off steam. That’s it. Can’t we have a little more? I sure hope so cause’ I’m really looking forward to the second season.
Name a character with traits you feel are sadly overlooked by everyone
Lucy Heartfilia (Fairy Tail)
While I ended up being very veeeery disappointed in Fairy Tail after following it for more than 10 years, I’ve always liked Lucy and she’s my favorite character in the series. The problem is that Mashima constantly used her as fan-service material as well as a recurrent damsel in distress. This is why I feel many people overlook just how strong and intelligent she is. Lucy’s magic sometimes looks weak to others because, at first, she doesn’t do the fighting herself; rather, she uses Celestial Spirits who fight in her stead (though she fights alongside them later on). However, opening gates to call the Spirits and keeping them in battle requires a lot of magic, so she is hardly weak. Lucy’s also extremely smart: she often comes up with strategies for battle and figures out complicated stuff that others have trouble with.
Name a morally grey character (villain or anti hero!)
Gozen Eboshi (Mononoke Hime)
Mononoke Hime isn’t great just because of San, Ashitaka and the wolves. It’s also great because Gozen Eboshi exists. Lady Eboshi is the founder and leader of Iron Town and, while it’s true that she’s power-hungry and doesn’t care to hurt the environment for her goals, she’s a woman who really cares about her town, especially the women, and, due to her tough past, she is deeply empathetic towards people.
A character you’re stunned isn’t more famous (character from a piece of fiction you’re amazed isn’t more famous)
Victorique de Blois (Gosick)
Okay, I know for a fact that she has a lot of fans but what I mean to say is that she’s not as famous as I expected, which is a shame given how awesome she is. Victorique is a petite, doll-like girl who’s exceptionally clever and has amazing detective-skills. However, she’s not your typical “cold girl with no feelings”. Victorique sometimes has childlike mannerisms and is extremely fond of sweets. She’s also weak to pain and can be very sensitive. Truly, if you haven’t watched Gosick, go watch it right now. You won’t regret it. To this day, I think I haven’t found a female protagonist as charming, clever and sweet as Victorique. She’ll forever be one of my favorite fictional characters.
And that’s all! This was really fun to do.
