So, after some pondering of what should my first post be about, I decided to dedicate it to the wonderful world of Pacthesis’ games. For those who don’t know who she is, Pacthesis (aka Amy) is the creator of several flash sim dates in Deviantart (most of them made when she was in High School!). But right now, understandably, she is busy with life and has been on a hiatus for almost two years. If she ever comes back and starts making games commercially, my wallet and I will be ready to buy her stuff, since it’s thanks to her that I got into otome games in the first place. Pacthesis’ games are a perfect example of how art can improve over time and how, to my mind, STORY REIGNS ABOVE ALL.
Note: This review contains very mild spoilers but if you still want to avoid them just jump to “conclusive thoughts”.
Although most of her games are dating sims, the first one I’ve ever played was a visual novel with a point and click adventure (it has a sort of mystery too, so I added it to my mystery list). Of course I’m referring to Xolga and Mr.Toko. If you still haven’t played this gem, then you’re missing out and I recommend you to play it very soon.
Basically, everything starts when very serious Detective Xolga, unwillingly receives a new assistant (aka Mr. Toko) who literally ROFL to avoid getting bored 😆. Our two protagonists get a mission to retrieve a cursed pendant from what looks like an abandoned house.
However, things get complicated when a shooting sets off out of the blue. Luckily, Mr. Toko goes into alpha male mode and saves the day! Only to be thanked later with a punch , poor Mr. Toko. When they finally get to the last room, Xolga discovers the locket nearby and OH NOES WHAT’S THIS, something unexpected happens!
Mr. Toko starts having fun with poor Teddy Xolga but stops when he finds a round pendant by his feet. Could it be?! Yes, it’s the same cursed pendant from before! However, Xolga’s warnings are too late, because Mr. Toko has suffered the same fate!
And the adventure continues . Will Xolga and Mr. Toko be able to return to their original bodies? Welp, I think it’s better for you to play it so that the ride is more fun, but I’ll definitely say this game is just as funny as it is sad (though heartwarming as well, and even mysterious at times). Also, the references are hilarious. There’s an overall of nine short episodes PLUS a sequel of eight. Give these adorable characters a chance as they travel through different worlds to find the locket, you won’t regret it!
As I said at the beginning of this post, Pacthesis was pretty much the reason I got into otome games. After having played Xolga and Mr. Toko, I discovered that Amy not only had made this game but also a bunch of sim dates (some even older than Xolga and Mr. Toko’s first game, since this one came out in 2011). Out of curiosity, I checked them out and needless to say they got me so hooked that I started searching for more dating sims on the web. In the end, I discovered that they are actually pretty common in Japan, but are better known as ‘otome games’.
So, this is where her dating sims come. All of them have pretty much the same structure, in the sense that something happens and you’ve got to do this and that until the time limit runs out (which is always 30 days). They are also stat-raising dating sims so you need to talk to the guys in order to earn EXP with them and be likeable enough for them to go on dates with you (it’s best to focus on one character at a time). This system also applies to other things like playing mini games or working to earn money. After you get certain endings, several cheats become available for more convenient playthroughs. Also, here’s a funny fact: some of the romanceable guys in these games make an appearance in Xolga and Mr. Toko, just as these two also show up in the sim dates (usually selling stuff you’ll need, or in another way).
Even though the first Pacthesis’ dating sims aren’t as professional as the last ones, I think it’s admirable how she could manage to create all these little games by herself, and at such a young age! She improved a lot over time and was able to create her only non-dating sim adventure (Xolga and Mr. Toko), which I personally think it’s the best out of all her games.
So, this is the end of my review (/^▽^)/ hehe! I hope you enjoyed the ride and try Pacthesis’ games sometime, they’re really worth it. See you ‘next post’ (≧∇≦*)!!
PS: Some of her games aren’t working on Deviantart but you can find them on google search.
Edit: Pacthesis has opened her own website!
January is DatingSimonth, so be sure to check what other people post as well 😀 !!
